Avian Influenza (Human H7N9) (Update)

The National Health and Family Planning Commission of China have notified WHO of 11 new laboratory-confirmed human cases of avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection, including 4 deaths.

Onset dates range from 23 March to 21 April. Cases range in age from 23 to 69 years. Of these 11 cases, 7 are male. The majority (10 cases) reported exposure to live poultry, slaughtered poultry or live poultry markets. One case had a history of selling pork in a market.

Cases were reported from 5 provinces and municipalities: Jiangsu (6), Jiangxi (2), Anhui (1), Shandong (1) and Zhejiang (1).

Advice for Travellers

Travellers experiencing severe flu like symptoms within 10 days of returning from China, should contact their GP and inform them of their recent travel to China.
