Chikungunya Virus Infection in Caribbean Islands (Update)

AnĀ outbreak of chikungunya virus infection in the Caribbean islands is widening with the recent report of 3 cases in Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands. Cases are increasing in the following islands: the French quarter of Saint Martin now has a total of 294 probable or confirmed cases; 127 probable or confirmed cases have been reported in Martinique; 31 probable or confirmed cases in Saint Barthelemy (St Barts) and 27 probable or confirmed cases in Guadeloupe.
Two confirmed chikungunya cases have been reported in the Dutch side of Saint Martin (Sint Maartin).
Advice for Travellers
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
