WHO certifies Georgia as malaria-free
24 Jan 2025
The World Health Organization (WHO) certified the country of Georgia as malaria-free on 23 January 2025
Georgia joins the list of 45 countries and one territory that have been certified as free of malaria.
Malaria elimination certification is granted by WHO when a country has:
- shown that malaria transmission has been interrupted nationwide for at least three consecutive years
- demonstrated the capacity to prevent the re-establishment of malaria transmission
Malaria is a serious parasite infection that is transmitted by the bite of female mosquitoes. Malaria prevention measures are not required for travellers to Georgia, although insect bites should still be avoided as other insect-borne infections may be present.
See the Malaria page for further information on the disease.
