Costa Rica: Changes to country yellow fever certificate requirements

24 Dec 2024

The Costa Rican Ministry of Health have recently published (in Spanish) changes to their yellow fever certificate (ICVP) requirements for international travellers, which will become effective on 11 January 2025.

The publication:

  • provides an update to the list of countries that Costa Rica consider are at risk of yellow fever, which includes Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, French Guiana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Venezuela and Trinidad and Tobago in the Americas, and some countries in Africa (these are not specified in the publication)
  • advises that proof of vaccination against yellow fever is a requirement for entry into Costa Rica for travellers arriving from a country which is listed as being at risk of yellow fever
  • cautions that anyone arriving in Costa Rica from a country considered 'at risk' without a yellow fever certificate will not be able to enter Costa Rica
  • provides a list of people who are considered exempt from providing a yellow fever certificate

This information supersedes the advice previously provided by Costa Rica in the most recent World Health Organization publication 'Vaccination requirements and recommendations for international travellers' and should be followed.

Yellow Fever Certificate Requirements

The World Health Organization (WHO) consult with individual countries (known as State Parties) each year to confirm and update their country's yellow fever vaccine and proof of vaccine requirements for international travellers. This is also known as a country’s International Certificate of Vaccine or Prophylaxis (ICVP) requirement.

Information is published every two years by the WHO and details of the country yellow fever requirements can be found on our Country pages. An update from the WHO highlighting yellow fever requirements for all countries are anticipated in the coming months.
