Dengue in Africa (update 2)

The Africa Centres for Disease Prevention and Control report continued transmission of dengue in Africa.

From 1 January 2024 to 30 August 2024, the following countries have reported cases:

Burkina Faso: 40,209 cases (56 deaths)

Cameroon: 1 case

Cabo Verde: 1,205 cases

Chad: 983 cases

Cote d’Ivoire: 39 cases

Ethiopia: 824 cases

Ghana: 54 cases

Kenya: 88 casesMali: 5 389 cases (6 deaths)

Mauritius: 9,166 cases (8 deaths)

Sao Tome & Principe: 9 cases

Senegal: 23 cases

Sudan: 1,830 cases (2 deaths)

Togo: 2,205 cases (3 deaths)

Advice for Travellers

The mosquitoes which transmit dengue bite during the day, between dawn and dusk. They are particularly persistent and aggressive.

If you are travelling to an affected region, you are potentially at risk of dengue fever and should be aware of this infection.

If you develop a high temperature (fever) either during or after travelling to an affected area, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible and give details of your recent travel history.
