Chikungunya in France: Paris area

02 Aug 2024

Public health authorities in France have reported a locally-acquired case of chikungunya in the Paris area. Based on current public information, the case was infected in Paris or neighbouring Gennevilliers.

Chikungunya is rare in European countries, although it is transmitted by a type of mosquito that is now found in the Paris area.

Advice for Travellers

Chikungunya is an infection spread by mosquito bites and can cause a high temperature (fever) and intense pain in your joints.  There is no vaccine available against chikungunya.

The mosquitoes which transmit chikungunya bite during the day, between dawn and dusk.  They are particularly persistent and aggressive.

If you are travelling to an area where chikungunya is present, you are potentially at risk of infection and should be aware of this infection.

If you develop a fever either during or after travelling to an affected area, you should seek medical advice as soon as possible and give details of your recent travel history.
