Stricter Border Control Measures for Travellers Arriving in the UK

05 Feb 2021

The UK Government have announced tougher border control measures are to be introduced in the UK for both outbound and inbound passengers in order to reduce the risk of Covid-19 transmission, and reduce the risk of importing or exporting new variants.

The new measures include:

  • Travellers wishing to depart from the UK are required to have a valid legal reason for travel. Without this, travellers may face a fine and be directed to return home.
  • From 15th February 2021, anyone travelling into the UK will be required to quarantine in a government-approved facility for 10 days.

For further information on quarantine facilities, including on exemptions, see the UK Government’s announcement here.  Further details, including the UK 4 nations approach are yet to be released.

Advice for Travellers

Before making any travel plans, you should consider if your journey is essential and legally permitted.

Prior to permitted travel, you should check all of the following, and continue to check these during your trip as guidance may change at short notice:

  • FCDO Travel Advisory Notices
  • The risk of exposure to coronavirus (COVID-19) at your destination
  • Requirements for COVID testing at your destination prior to return
  • Self-isolation rules on return to the UK
  • Travel Insurance
  • Medical Facilities at your destination
