The theme for World AIDS Day 2018, which will be marking its 30th anniversary on 1st December, will be “Know your status”.
Since the first cases of HIV were reported more than 35 years ago, 78 million people have become infected with HIV and 35 million have died from AIDS-related illnesses. UNAIDS
is leading the global effort to end AIDS as a public health threat by 2030.
Today three in four people living with HIV know their status. But there is still progress to be made, including reaching people living with HIV who are unaware of their status and ensuring that they are linked to quality care and prevention services.
HIV testing is essential to achieving the 90-90-90 HIV global treatment target by 2020:
- 90% of all people living with HIV will know their HIV status.
- 90% of all people with diagnosed HIV infection will receive sustained antiretroviral therapy.
- 90% of all people receiving antiretroviral therapy will have viral suppression.
