Diphtheria in Pakistan (Punjab State)

Cases of diphtheria have been reported in Punjab state in the northeast of Pakistan. The peak season for the infection begins in October and to date, 22 cases including 3 fatalities have been reported since June 2015. Cases have been identified in the following areas: Lahore city (7), Sheikhupora city (6), Okara city (4), Gujranawala and Hafizabad (2 cases each).

Of the cases, 45% were unimmunised with a further 13% partially immunised.

Advice for Travellers

It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of diphtheria vaccine according to the UK childhood schedule. It is recommended that travellers to Pakistan have a diphtheria booster (or course) if not already protected.
