Zika Virus Infection in Cape Verde

The media has reported on an outbreak of Zika virus infection in Cape Verde. On 2 November 2015, the Ministry of Health confirmed the outbreak following laboratory testing of 64 samples from suspected cases. Seventeen samples were positive for Zika virus.
Between September and October, a total of 1000 suspected cases have been reported. The outbreak is occurring in the city of Praia thus far and between 50-60 individuals are seeking medical attention at health facilities daily.

Cape Verde is a popular destination for UK travellers.
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
