Chikungunya Virus Infection in Mexico (Update)

The outbreak of chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection in Mexico is ongoing. As of 17 June 2015, 10 states have reported cases; nationally 6436 suspected cases have been reported. Of those, 1436 have been confirmed as CHIKV.
The worst affected state is Guerrero with just over 611 confirmed cases. Chiapas state reports an upsurge of suspected cases; in the past week an increase of 1000 has been noted.
Advice for Travellers
Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
