Zika Virus Infection in Brazil (Update)

Cases of Zika virus infection (ZIKV) have been reported from further states of Brazil. On 31 May 2015, the first case of ZIKV was confirmed in the state of Rio de Janeiro on the east coast of the country. Health officials report that the case had no history of travel outwith the state.

Three retrospective cases of ZIKV were identified in Mata Grande municipality, Alagoas state. The three cases had onset of symptoms at the beginning of the year (2015). Alagoas state on the northeast coast of Brazil borders with Bahia state where several cases of ZIKV have recently been reported. The three cases had onset of symptoms at the beginning of the year (2015).

The other states of Brazil reporting ZIKV infections include: Bahia, Bahia and Sao Paulo.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, is recommended. Bite avoidance measures include: covering up with clothing, the use of insect repellent and bed nets impregnated with insecticide. Reduction of mosquito breeding sites around hotel rooms/homes is advised for longer term stays.
