Yellow Fever in Brazil

The media has reported on two fatal cases of yellow fever in Goias state, central Brazil.
The first case was reported in early February 2015, when a 22-year-old man from Alto Paraiso in Chapada dos Veadeiros was transferred to hospital in Brazilia, Federal District after he displayed symptoms of yellow fever.
The second case was recently diagnosed with yellow fever and confirmed by the Health Department on 21 May 2015. The man had visited the Araguaia River area on a fishing holiday and the city of Luis Alves in Goias state. He was admitted to hospital in Brazilia but died from yellow fever on 19 May 2015.

Advice for Travellers
The Federal District of Brazil and Goias state lie within the yellow fever risk areas of Brazil and vaccination to these areas is recommended by WHO. Travellers should also take precautions to avoid mosquito bites.
