Hepatitis A in Russian Federation
16 Feb 2015
An outbreak of hepatitis A in the Republic of North Caucasus has been linked to contaminated drinking water supplied by local companies in the Republic of Dagestan. A total of 69 cases have been reported from three areas; the towns of Derbent and Dagestanskiye and the village of Gedzhukh.
Laboratory testing has confirmed that the local water supply is the source of infection; all those infected obtained their water from the same main.
Advice for Travellers
Hepatitis A vaccine is usually recommended for all travellers visiting the Russian Federation. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene at all times.
