Cholera in Dominican Republic

A small number of cases of cholera have been located in Villa Mella, Santo Domingo West municipality of Santo Domingo province on the south coast of the island. Four cases attended hospital where two have been admitted for treatment. Three of the cases are from the same community and the hospital view this as a new outbreak.

Advice for Travellers

Cholera is considered a very low risk for travellers to Dominican Republic who have access to safe drinking water and who maintain a high standard of personal hygiene and food safety.

Cholera vaccine is available for those mixing closely with the local population who cannot ensure safe water/food and a good standard of personal hygiene.
