Measles in South Africa

An increase in confirmed measles cases in South Africa was identified in late October 2014. A total of 62 cases were recorded during 2014, this compared with a total of 5 confirmed cases during 2013.
In 2014, the cases were located in: Northern Cape Province (30); Gauteng Province (6); and Western Cape Province (4). Sporadic cases were detected in all other provinces of the country apart from Limpopo.
Measles cases continue to be reported and as of 9 January 2015, 3 confirmed cases have been recorded this year.
Advice for Travellers
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
