Avian Influenza (H7N9) (Human) in China (Update)

The National Health and Family Planning Commission of China has notified WHO of 11 new laboratory-confirmed human cases (including 5 deaths) of avian influenza A(H7N9) virus infection.

The 11 cases include: 3 females and 8 males aged between 27-81 years; All but one had direct contact with live poultry. The cases were located in: the city of Shanghai (1), Jiangsu Province (1), Fujian Province (1), Zhejang Province (2), Guangdong Province (2) and  Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region (4).

The government is taking steps to strengthen surveillance, reinforce case management and medical treatment and inform and communicate risk with the public.

Advice for Travellers

Travellers experiencing severe flu like symptoms within 10 days of returning from China, should contact their GP and inform them of their recent travel to China.
