Chikungunya Virus Infection in Dominican Republic (Update)

The Minister of Health for Dominican Republic has reported that isolated cases of chikungunya virus infection have been identified in other areas of the country outwith San Cristobal province. Isolated cases have been reported in Puerto Plata on the northern coast and San Pedro on the southern coast.

The Minister of Health has reinforced the advice given on collecting and storing water safely and destroying mosquito breeding sites around the home.

Advice for Travellers

Avoidance of mosquito bites, particularly during daylight hours, by covering up with clothing, the use of bite avoidance measures such as repellent and bed nets is advised. Elimination of breeding sites around hotel rooms/houses is advised for longer term stays.
