Hepatitis A in Cuba

The Provincial Center of Hygiene and Epidemiology of Havana has reported an outbreak of hepatitis A infection in the San Miguel del Padron municipality in the north of the country. Sixty cases have been reported to date, with the elderly accounting for the majority of infections, although some children have been infected

The source of the infection is thought to be polluted drinking water as the water supply and sewage systems in the area are in a poor condition. Further cases are expected.

Advice for Travellers

The prevalence of hepatitis A infection is considered moderate to high in Cuba and protection by immunisation is usually recommended for all travellers. Travellers should also maintain a high standard of food, water and personal hygiene.
