Meningococcal Meningitis (Suspected) in Ghana

AnĀ outbreak suspected to be meningococcal meningitis has been reported in four districts of the Northern Region of Ghana.
To date, 30 cases and one death have been recorded. Cases have occurred in the following districts: Yendi (23), Mion (2), Saboba (2) and Zabbzugu (1). Laboratory confirmation and the microbial aetiology of the outbreak is awaited. Health officials in Yendi have requested meningococcal vaccine from the authorities in order to implement a vaccination campaign to contain the outbreak.
Advice for Travellers
Ghana is a country within the African meningitis belt and outbreaks occur each year during the hot dry season, generally between December and June. Quadrivalent meningococcal vaccine is recommended for those considered to be at risk.
