Measles in Vietnam (Update)
12 Feb 2014
Further suspected measles cases have been reported in Vietnam; 620 suspected cases have been recorded since the beginning of the year (2014). Cases have occurred in Hanoi (30), Ho Chi Minh City (138), Lao Cai province (120) and Son La province (80). The province with the highest number of cases is Yen Bai with 253 and one measles associated death.
The majority of cases were not fully immunised against measles and parents are being encouraged to have their children immunised if they are not protected.
Advice for Travellers
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
