Measles in Yemen
13 Mar 2012
The Health Ministry of Yemen has requested international assistance to deal with a surge in measels cases and deaths that began in mid 2011. As of February 2012, a total of 3767 confirmed measles cases and 126 resulting deaths have been recorded.
The situation is considered to be a consequence of the breakdown of basic health services during the year-long political crisis. The government has appealed for aid to assist with an immunisation campaign in the worst affected regions beginning 10 March 2012.
Advice for Travellers
It should be confirmed that children have received their recommended doses of MMR at 12-15 months of age and again pre-school around 3 years 6 months, while unimmunised adults who have not had the disease themselves may consider vaccination if thought to be at risk. Two doses of MMR vaccine are required to give adequate protection.
